Why Am I So Tired? I Just Got Back from Vacation.

I just returned from a 5-day vacation to attend a friend's wedding. I slept in and unplugged so why I'm feeling more tired than before I left? I thought I would be refreshed and recharged, but instead, I was dragging myself around and struggling to focus.

Does this sound like you? There are a few possible reasons.

Jet lag. If you travel to a different time zone, it can take a few days to adjust to the new time. This can cause fatigue, headaches, and difficulty sleeping.

Change in routine. When on vacation, you often don't have to worry about work or other commitments. You can sleep in, eat when you are hungry, and do whatever you feel like. This can be a lot of fun, but it can also disrupt my body's natural rhythm. Few things are more disruptive to our nervous system than a deviation from our routine.

Excitement. Vacations can be exciting. We are often doing new things and meeting new people. This can be a lot of fun, but it can also be exhausting.

Stress. Even though vacations are supposed to be relaxing, they can also be stressful. We may have to deal with travel delays, lost luggage, or other unexpected challenges. This can add to our fatigue.

So, what can I do to overcome post-vacation fatigue? Here are a few tips:

Give yourself time to adjust. Don't try to cram too much into your first few days back. Give yourself time to adjust and get back into your routine.

Get plenty of rest. This is probably the most important thing you can do. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

Eat healthy foods. Avoid sugary drinks and processed foods. Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.

Exercise regularly. Exercise can help to improve your energy levels and reduce stress.

Take a break from technology. Limit your screen time and give your mind a chance to rest.
