
As trainers, teachers, presenters, and managers, we aim to communicate and impart knowledge to our audience effectively. One of the most crucial factors in achieving this is understanding the diverse learning styles of our learners. We can enhance engagement, retention, and overall learning outcomes by tailoring our teaching methods to accommodate various learning preferences.
You may ask, "Why would I look to a yoga teacher for information on teaching sytles?"
This is a great question. First, it is helpful to understand a bit of my work background. Before 2021 and the creation of Align Self Care, I worked in hospitality management. Much of the several decades I spent included running departments, onboarding new hires, teaching food handling and alcohol awareness classes, and more. So training was part of my vernacular. As a yoga teacher, you have to develop a keen ability to observe and adapt poses and guidance to individual students' bodies and abilities and tailor the instruction to not only different learning styles but different styles from class to class and week to week, based on who shows up and how each person "shows" up. It is also necessary to recognize the style differences without guidance from the participants. By noticing which cues resonate most with each student, whether it's visual demonstrations, verbal explanations, or physical adjustments, a yoga teacher becomes a master in adapting their content to meet the unique needs of their diverse classes. This is also true when I present at an event and am not privy to a list of the attendees' learning preferences.
So what do I do? Let's first look at why this is important.
The Importance of Differentiated Instruction
Differentiating instruction means adapting our teaching strategies to meet the individual needs of our learners. This approach recognizes that people learn in different ways and that a one-size-fits-all approach is often ineffective. By understanding the different learning styles, we can:

It's important to note that most people have a combination of learning styles, rather than just one dominant style. However, understanding these general categories can provide valuable insights into how to tailor your teaching methods.
Strategies for Teaching to Different Learning Styles
Here are some strategies to consider when teaching different learning styles:
Visual learners:Â Use visuals such as diagrams, charts, and videos. Provide handouts with key points. Encourage learners to create visual representations of the material.
Auditory learners:Â Use lectures, discussions, and audio recordings. Encourage learners to repeat information out loud or to create audio recordings of their own.
Kinesthetic learners:Â Incorporate hands-on activities, role-playing, and simulations. Encourage learners to move around and experiment with the material.

Get to know your learners:Â When you can, take the time to understand their learning styles and preferences.
Provide multiple learning opportunities:Â Offer a variety of activities and resources to accommodate different learning styles, even when you don't know the preferences of your audience.
Encourage active participation:Â Create opportunities for learners to interact with the material and with each other.
Provide feedback:Â Offer constructive feedback to help learners improve their understanding and skills.
Ask for feedback: When available create a poll or survey on the event or session to learn what worked and what may need some adjusting.
By understanding the different learning styles and implementing effective teaching strategies, you can create a more engaging, inclusive, and effective learning experience for all of your learners.
